Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Isn’t Birmingham Water Works the same as Jefferson County Sewer?

A: No. The Water Works Board of the City of Birmingham is completely separate from and independent of the Jefferson County Sewer.

Q: If the water board is different from the sewer department, why do I send one payment to Birmingham Water Works?

A: The ability to make just one payment is available as a convenience for customers.

Q: Can’t I just pay my water bill and not the sewer bill?

A: No. Water and sewer payments are applied to the entire bill. If a customer remits payment less than the amount of the full balance, BWWB will accept the payment. Any payments will be applied to the oldest part of the bill first. BWWB encourages all customers to remain up-to-date with their payments.
