Well-maintained watersheds are essential for a healthy water supply. A watershed is the area of land around a water source.

Rain and melting snow often carry sediments and other materials into lakes and streams that can contaminate water supplies. Through the Birmingham Water Works Board’s watershed protection policy, construction and development are limited near our primary water sources.

When construction projects are planned, the Birmingham Water Works staff works with developers to ensure projects meet the Board’s standard of excellence in protecting and preserving water supplies.
